Steps in applying for D.WRE Board Certification

  1. Fill out the D.WRE application form.

  2. Request for 3 professional references to fill out the reference form and send to us. Please note, if you have a minimum of 3 professional references, no more than one reference may come from one organization, firm or entity.

  3. Create a username and password for online application and submit information and payment.

  4. Email your D.WRE application form and your resume or C.V. to [email protected].

  5. Your application will be reviewed by AAWRE Admissions Committee.

  6. You will be notified of status of application.

Completing the Application Forms

Applicants for the Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer board certification for the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers must complete the AAWRE application in its entirety and remit the appropriate fees, in order to be considered. The application must be completed in English and all payments must be in U.S. dollars.

Upon submission of the application, the application will be reviewed for completeness by AAWRE staff prior to being sent to the AAWRE Admissions Committee. If an application is deemed incomplete at the published deadline, further processing/review will be delayed until the next application cycle.

There are following possible outcomes that result, once an application has been fully reviewed by the AAWRE Admissions Committee: 1) the applicant may be approved for the D.WRE Board Certification, with the panel oral exam waived; 2) the applicant may be recommended for the panel oral examination; 3) the applicant may be required to submit additional documentation and/or clarification of professional experience and expertise; 4) the applicant is denied for the D.WRE Board Certification. 

All recommendations from the AAWRE Admissions Committee is provided to the AAWRE Board of Trustees.

The AAWRE Board of Trustees is responsible for the issuance of the certificate of special knowledge to an applicant, indicating attainment of the Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer Board Certification.

Application Deadlines

AAWRE has expanded our application reviews to 4 times per year, with deadlines at end of each of the following months: February, May, August, November.

Once a candidate submits the initial application, along with the application fee- the candidate has 60 days to complete the complete application packet with resume/CV, three professional references and other documentation requested. Upon 90 days after submitting the initial application and fee, the candidate will forfeit the application fee.

A candidate will be granted up to 6 months to submit the full application and supporting documents. If a candidate is recommended for the panel oral exam, the candidate is granted up to an additional 6 months to complete their panel oral exam.

Application Fee

All applicants must submit a $300 application fee ($400 application fee for non-ASCE members). This fee covers program expenses including application review, oral examination, record keeping, issuance of a certificate of special knowledge and pin, and first year's board certification dues.

Annual Certification Fee

All fees shall be paid in United States dollars by check or money order drawn on a United States bank.

Diplomates will receive a renewal notice annually. The renewal form will require that the Diplomate:

  • attest to their continued active engagement in the practice of water resources engineering,
  • attest to their continued possession of a valid license to practice engineering,
  • attest to earning 20 professional Development Hours (PDHs) during the preceding 12 month period,
  • attest to adherence to the Academy Code of Ethics, and
  • submit an annual fee.

The Annual Certification Fee is set by the AAWRE Board of Trustees and is currently $150 for ASCE members and $200 for non-ASCE members.
