October 17, 2014

Dear AAWRE Colleagues,

I’ve served on the Board of Trustees of AAWRE since 2009. When I assumed the role of president and board chair last October, I felt positive and excited about the future of water resources engineering and our Academy, despite the many challenges facing our profession. I remain as optimistic today.

My term expires this month, and I cannot let this moment pass without telling you once more what an honor and humbling experience it has been to work with such a distinguished, dedicated and talented group of professionals. You showed me the passion, resilience, and seasoned skills that fuel our mission and give meaning to our vision — each and every day. I stand in awe of your strong and insightful leadership.

I could not be prouder of the strides our organization has made during the past months, or more grateful for the opportunity to lead this preeminent Academy and help it advance toward its full potential. Over the past year, we have accomplished many things together, including:

  • Increasing number of new Diplomates by more than 12% and corporate sponsorship by 300%.
  • Growing revenues to new highs and turning positive surplus for both 2013 and 2014.
  • Developing improved ways to serve our Diplomates and strengthen our Academy.
  • Creating our first strategic and marketing plan for sustaining excellence in everything we do.
  • Fueling stronger national and international visibility, awareness and branding.
  • Inaugurating and presenting our first AAWRE Outstanding Practitioner in Water Resources Engineering Award.
  • Hosting our first ever AAWRE Business Networking Luncheon at the 2014 EWRI Annual Congress.
  • Celebrating ten years as the world’s leading expert certification organization of, by, and for water resources engineers.

We’ve also drawn a priceless roadmap for reaching the positive changes we seek. Our extraordinary achievements were a collective effort and a credit to all of you — one an effort I know will continue and take AAWRE to new heights of excellence. You are leading by example in furthering AAWRE’s mission to improve our practice, elevate our standards, and advance our profession, and every day your actions are making a positive difference. You’ve made great things happen. That is what great leaders do. That is what great boards do.

As the industry leaders, we have the collective power and responsibility to find effective solutions to the challenges and changes that lie ahead for our profession and our planet. With climate change shifting water patterns everywhere, the availability or lack of water can support or threaten our global economy. Innovative solutions in water resources efficiency will be desperately needed. Change is inevitable, and each one of us can play an important role in our collective organizational and professional success, and in sustaining our world. The personal involvement of each one of us is critical.

As a part of AAWRE’s virtual and intellectual community, we share the responsibility for building and enhancing it by regularly identifying and recruiting talented individuals to join our circle of outstanding and passionate D.WRE professionals. Take a few moments to think about your staff and colleagues. Identify those whose body of work, technical expertise, professionalism and energy make them ideal candidates for AAWRE certification, and help them receive the same distinguished recognition you have earned. The D.WRE certification is the highest level of advanced post-licensure certification for professional engineers (P.E.). It brings with it a strong sense of responsibility to the community we live and work in, a commitment to optimizing the water resources solutions we develop and maximizing the benefits of our work, and a sense of belonging and contributing to our noble profession and for a sustainable world.

AAWRE cannot maintain its renowned level of excellence without your participation in the Academy and its work. With your help, support and leadership by example, we can ensure that water resources engineering is positioned to find and follow the best course of action for our collective future and for that of the planet. I am confident that the future is bright and that our organization is uniquely capable of identifying and meeting the challenges ahead.

Abraham Lincoln once said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. Let’s continue on this journey together, make great things happen and shape a brighter future for our profession and the communities we serve so well. Without the dedication and hard work of you, our best and brightest, there would be no Academy. Your profession has benefited enormously from your steadfast commitment. I have great confidence in Jerry Webb as your incoming president. The Academy will continue to prosper under his capable leadership.

Again, I thank you deeply for your support and friendship during my tenure, and for upholding a higher standard through your support of AAWRE. Because of your collective dedication and faithfulness to our mission, we can be as excited about our future as we are proud of our past. I eagerly look forward to working with all of you as your past president. May you enjoy with a full heart the fruit of your labor. The world needs you.

With my best wishes for your continued success,
