AAWRE is pleased to announce the election of Dennis L. Richards, P.E., D.WRE, F.EWRI, F.ASCE as the AAWRE 2023 President-Elect. Mr. Richards has served on the AAWRE Admissions Committee since 2017 and has served as an exam panelist since 2012. He has completed one term on the AAWRE Board of Trustees and currently serves as the Chair of the Admissions Committee. He will begin his year as President-Elect on October 1.

Mr. Richards is currently a senior water resources engineer with Olsson in Chandler, Arizona. Mr. Richards is a professional civil engineer specializing in stormwater, hydraulic, and sedimentation engineering, and currently working as a consulting civil engineer. His experience encompasses planning, analysis, design, and construction of storm water and flood control projects. He has served as Project Principal and/or Project Manager for numerous projects involving hydraulic and sediment transport analyses, floodplain delineation, channel and bridge scour analyses, stream stability, levee and/or bank protection design, and grade­ control structure design.

Mr. Richards has conducted investigations to evaluate channel stability and impacts to structures due to in­ stream sand and gravel mining. Mr. Richards has provided technical support for litigation cases concerning drainage and flooding problems, channel and bank erosion, sedimentation, and floodplain/floodway issues. Dennis has extensive experience in serving in professional societies such as the EWRI and ASCE. He has served on the EWRI Governing Board (2011-2014); EWRI Awards Committee (2011-2014); Bridge Scour Task Force (2005-2009); ASCE Region 8 Governor (2008-2010); EWRI New Professionals Council; ASCE Task Committee on Credentialing to Raise the Bar; ASCE Committee on Ethical Practice; and ASCE Arizona Section & Phoenix Branch Membership Champion. He currently serves on the EWRI Standards Development Council; EWRI Local Activities Council; EWRI Task Committee on Scour at Various In-Stream Structures; EWRI Management Practices for Erosion and Sediment Control Standards Committee; ASCE Arizona State Advocacy Captain; and the AAWRE Steering Committee - Q/C Low-Head Dam Inventory.

Mr. Richards stated: "AAWRE is an esteemed professional organization that exemplifies excellence in water resources engineering.  Its vision is that board certified water resources engineers are global leaders serving society in advancing sustainable management of the world’s water.  In support of that vision AAWRE is dedicated to improving the practice, elevating the standards, and advancing the profession of water resources engineering for the benefit of the public.  It is an honor to have been associated with AAWRE since 2005, and to have served with fellow Diplomates on the Board of Trustees and various board committees.
