The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) hosted its 8th annual ceremony at the EWRI's World Environmental & Water Resources Congress in Albuquerque, NM on May 21. AAWRE honored new Honorary Diplomates and recognized new inductees- which included new Honorary Diplomates, Dr. Cecil Lue-Hing, Dr. Naidu, Mr. Howard Neukrug and Dr. George Pinder. The ceremony included speakers EWRI President Dan Thomas, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, F.ASCE, ASCE President Andy Herrmann, P.E., SECB, F.ASCE and AAWRE President-Elect Rob Traver, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, M.ASCE.

The annual AAWRE Induction ceremony is devoted to honoring and celebrating the new class of Diplomates and also give special recognitions to Diplomates and AAWRE Committee members that have made vast contributions in efforts aligned with AAWRE’s goals.

At this year’s ceremony, AAWRE gave tribute to three Diplomates who passed away over the last few years: Clinton L. Davis, P.E., D.WRE, M.ASCE; Francis Magibisela, P.E., D.WRE; and Song-Kai Yan, P.E., D.WRE.

The new Honorary Inductees were honored with an Honorary medallion, certificate, and lapel pin- as Dr. Traver performed the honors of introducing each of the new Honorary inductees. Two of the four Honorary inductees were present at ceremony- Dr. Cecil Lue-Hing and Dr. B.S.K. Naidu. Both Dr. Lue-Hing and Dr. Naidu provided personal thoughts on their recognitions and spoke directly to the audience on their careers. Pictures were taken with Dan Thomas and S.K. Nanda.

Honorary Diplomate is granted to outstanding individuals who meet one or more of the following criteria: has attained a position of eminence in the water resources engineering profession, has made a singular noteworthy achievement or sustained noteworthy contributions to the advancement of the water resources engineering profession, or has rendered outstanding service over a sustained period of time in the field of water resources and to the work of the Academy. The Honorary Diplomate is considered the highest honor and recognition given by AAWRE.

During the ceremony, ASCE President Andy Herrmann provided his remarks to the audience, in which he provided the overview and historical context in why ASCE helped launch AAWRE and supports professional certifications and its significance:

“AAWRE was the catalyst and the first pilot professional certification program started by ASCE in 2004 and since, there have been 3 additional professional certification programs created by ASCE. I want to personally thank all of you here, AAWRE and all the leaders through EWRI, for having the vision and creativity, in making AAWRE a successful program and the catalyst in professional certification for ASCE. Currently, ASCE’s certification programs have granted over 1000 Diplomate certifications.

Among the Diplomate ranks are seven ASCE past-presidents, 20 institute past-presidents, and several dozen ASCE Distinguished Members. This does not mean that specialty certification is an end of career achievement, actually it’s the opposite. Because specialty certification is based on minimum requirements, most civil engineers are eligible to become a Diplomate by their mid 30’s and will reap the most benefits from the program. It is ASCE’s goal to increase the benefits as the Academies mature, including providing those who hold the certification a leg-up on their competitors. If you are not a Diplomate but meet the minimum requirements I urge you to consider becoming a Diplomate.”

EWRI President, Dan Thomas remarked:

“EWRI would like to thank AAWRE and we fully support its mission in recognizing advanced, post-licensure certification for water resources engineers. I personally would like to thank all EWRI members for all of your participation and support of AAWRE and its efforts. Both EWRI and AAWRE cannot be successful without the support from all of you- the great members of the Institute.”

AAWRE President-Elect, Rob Traver stated:

“AAWRE would like to give sincere appreciation and a “Thank you” to ASCE and EWRI for the full support of AAWRE’s mission in recognizing advanced, post-licensure certification for professional water resources engineers. AAWRE cannot be successful without the full support from ASCE and EWRI.

I would like to thank President Andy Herrmann and President Dan Thomas for participating in tonight’s ceremony.”

For the Diplomate induction portion of the ceremony, AAWRE Treasurer Dr. Paul Boulos performed the roll call, as Mr. Ports and Dr. Traver awarded each of the new inductees with certificates and lapel pins. All new inductees got an opportunity to take personal pictures with Dr. Thomas and Mr. Nanda.
