November 17, 2015

It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as your AAWRE President for the past year. The opportunity to work with such a distinguished, dedicated and talented group of water resources engineering leadership has been a highlight in my career.  We have worked hard to advance the recognition, prestige and visibility of the engineering profession and we have made progress.

I am proud to highlight our top ten AAWRE successes this past year:

  • Strengthened national and international visibility, prestige and branding.
  • Launched the beginning of the second decade of operations for AAWRE, as the world’s leading advanced post-licensure certification organization of, by, and for water resources engineers.
  • Adopted a new Mission and Vision for AAWRE.
  • Improved website presence and improved ways to serve our Diplomates.
  • Fine-tuning our strategic, business and marketing plans for sustaining excellence.
  • Completed research on international engineering licensure equivalencies in foreign countries of vital interest for D.WRE certifications, thanks to AAWRE International Committee.
  • Inaugurated and presented our first AAWRE Service to the Academy Award and awarded our second Outstanding Practitioner in Water Resources Engineering Award.
  • Hosted our first AAWRE Business Networking Breakfast at the 2015 EWRI Annual Congress.
  • Increased number of new Diplomates by more than 11% and sustained corporate and organizational sponsorship by 150%.
  • Continued steady revenue growth while limiting our expenses.

As Immediate Past-President of AAWRE, I will do all that I can to support our new President Mike Markus and President-Elect Deborah Lee, and the Board.  I have great confidence that AAWRE will continue to prosper under their capable leadership.

I ask you to continue to show your support of AAWRE by encouraging your fellow colleagues to apply to become a D.WRE, for you to continue to seek leadership opportunities, and spread the word of AAWRE's mission and goals.  Words cannot express my gratitude for the opportunity to lead this organization and help it move toward its full potential.

You are leading by example in furthering AAWRE's mission to provide excellence in leadership by elevating the professional practice of water resources engineering through advanced certification, continuing education, and ethical practice. The role/vision of AAWRE is relevant to water resources engineers all around the world.

The end of my term as President coincides with my retirement from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after serving for 41+ years.  I am so thankful that I made the decision early in my career to work in water resources.  I could not have asked for a more satisfying and rewarding profession. I will miss the daily challenges and interactions with my friends and colleagues, but it is time for me to move to the next phase of my life.  I plan to continue to serve AAWRE and water resources engineering in any way possible in my retirement.

In closing, I'd like to extend my deepest thanks to Paul Boulos as our Past-President.  Under his leadership, AAWRE advanced on all fronts and he and out-going Trustees, Steve Abt, Dale Jacobson and Karen Kabbes will be missed on the Board.  I have tremendous respect for their personal commitment to the profession and their significant contributions to AAWRE.

Again, I thank you deeply for your support and friendship during my tenure as President of AAWRE.  I look forward to working with all of you as past-president.

Yours truly,
