Did you know that more U.S. residents have died in low head dam drowning incidents over the last two decades than in actual dam-breaks?  Would you like to play a role in making sure that life-saving low-head dam remediation happens to the greatest extent possible?

In support of AAWRE’s mission to support policy and initiatives that foster the welfare, safety and health of the public, the AAWRE has endorsed the Low Head Dams (LHD) Inventory Project. The LHD Inventory Project is an inter-organizational effort that includes EWRI, USSD and ASDSO members and the information on America’s low head dams inventory has been collected by hundreds of university students over the past few years.

What can YOU do as an AAWRE Diplomate to help save lives?

You can spend a few hours performing quality control checking of low-head dams that have been tentatively identified using Google Earth Pro.  The purpose of this webinar is to show you EXACTLY how to do so!  We will cover the very basics of using Google Earth Pro and show many examples of “pinned” low-head dams.  We’ll explain how you can choose from any county in available states to help us review.  Instructions will be given on how to access your data, perform the work, and then pass the checked data back.  Every county is different, but we estimate it will take from 0.5 to 3 hours to complete the review of most any county.

The webinar will be presented by the Karl Kingery of Hydrometrics, Inc., Peter Oldham and Allison Kunz from BYU, and introductions will be provided by Rollin Hotchkiss, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, F.ASCE.

Please join us on August 30 at 1pm EDT to learn more about this important project!
